YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A West Virginia woman who Mahwah police said was tailgating her husband as he drove a U-Haul to upstate New York was indicted by a grand jury in Hackensack yesterday on charges of carrying a semi-automatic handgun, dozens of rounds of ammunition and a large knife in her car.
Kristin Tibbetts told police when she was stopped on Route 287 last November that she, her husband and a friend were headed to upstate New York to visit friends.
Nicholas Tibbetts, who lives with his wife of two years in Handley, West Virginia, is originally from Cohoes, NY.
After a brief conversation, a police lieutenant recovered a .45-caliber Mini Firestorm handgun, an empty magazine, 20 rounds of ball ammunition and two rounds of hollow-point ammunition in the glove compartment “within easy reach by either the driver or passenger,” Mahwah Police Chief james Batelli said.
“An additional search located 50 rounds of .45 caliber ammunition and a large katana style knife,” Batelli said.
Tibbetts, 24, was released pending yesterday’s indictment, which charges her with possession of the gun without a carrying permit and possession of hollow-nosed bullets.
