The Division of Children and Families placed the youngster with a grandmother for the weekend, and the woman obtained a restraining order against Jewald R. Whitmore Jr., 51, who was being held in the Bergen County Jail pending a detention hearing on domestic assault charges after the incident late Friday at a West Passaic Street hotel, Lt. Dean Pinto said.

Officers Ryan Burke and Nicholas Mercoun, who went there just after 11 p.m., “learned that [the woman] had been assaulted and had fresh superficial wounds on her upper chest consistent with the struggling of being held back while she was attempting to leave the room where she and [Whitmore] were staying,” Pinto said.

After they brought her back to the hotel, the woman directed the officer to an open wall mount for a fire extinguisher that, instead, held a knife in a black cloth sheath, the lieutenant said.

An investigation was continuing, he said.
