YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Pennsylvania driver who fled through the Holland Tunnel after being stopped in Jersey City last week was caught yesterday by the same Port Authority police officer — and had more than 16½ pounds of pot in his van, authorities said.
William L. Reed, 42, took off in a silver 2005 Dodge van the night of May 15 after Port Authority Police Officer Martin Smolen stopped him at 12th and Provost streets for driving with his headlights off, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo said toight.
Reed, whose driver’s license was suspended, left Smolen with the vehicle’s registration with his name on it, Pentangelo said.
“Due to safety concerns, there was no pursuit,” he said.
Yesterday, Smolen spotted Reed driving the same van on 14th and Erie streets and stopped him, Pentangelo said.
While being taken into custody, Reed “indicated there was a quantity of marijuana in the van,” so a drug detection dog was summoned, he said.
Reed, who had warrants out of two towns, was being held on $40,000 bail in the Hudson County Correctional Facility, charged with various drug possession charges with the intent to distribute the drug, as well as hindering and obstruction in connection with the May 15 incident.
