YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Maywood police sergeant on the lookout for car burglars stopped a vehicle break-in spree after he caught one suspect and responding officers another before dawn this morning.
Craig Herbert, 20 ( above, left ), and 24-year-old Vincent Delatorre ( right ), both of Hackensack, admitted committing nine overnight borough car break-ins, as well as previous vehicle burglaries in town, Police Chief David Pegg said.
They were also suspected in car burglaries on Byrne Street in Hackensack overnight, he said.
Sgt. Timothy Moran was checking the area of Golf Avenue on foot around 1:40 a.m. following a rash of overnight vehicle break-ins when he noticed the interior light on inside a car parked on Romaine Avenue, Pegg told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
Seeing Moran coming, both men inside the vehicle took off, he said.
Moran grabbed Delatorre, who Pegg said was carrying GPS units, cash and other burglary proceeds.
Meanwhile, Herbert took off, he said.
After officers from Maywood, Rochelle Park, Hackensack and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Bureau of Police Services established a perimter, a sheriff’s K9 unit flushed out Herbert from a nearby yard, Pegg said.
He ran but barely got a block away before he was taken into custody by Maywood Officer Timothy Cook and Rochelle Park officers following a brief struggle, the chief said.
Pegg’s officers charged Delatorre and Herbert with burglary and theft and Herbert with eluding and aggravated assault on a police officer.
Both were being held on $30,000 bail each in the Bergen County Jail.
