YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Maywood police officer escaped serious injury when a car pulled into his path as he headed to a crime scene, forcing his cruiser off the roadway and into a telephone pole and a fire hydrant.
Officer Glenn Tutschek appeared fine but was put into a collar and on a backboard by EMTs, Police Chief David Pegg told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
An East Central Avenue resident called police just after 1:30 today and said she saw a man point a gun and threaten someone she knew during an argument, Pegg said.
Responding officers issued a be-on-the-lookout (BOLO) alert for two men in a black, four-door vehicle with tinted windows and Florida license plates.
Tutschek was responding to the call with his emergency lights and siren activated when he was cut off by an unknown silver sedan at the intersection of Maywood Avenue and Passaic Street, the chief said.
“This vehicle went around several vehicles that has already stopped [for the officer] and into the path of the patrol car, then fled the scene westbound on Passaic Street towards Rochelle Park,” Pegg told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
Passersby rendered aid to Tutschek immediately after the crash, the chief said. Maywood EMS arrived moments later, he said.
Tutschek was alert and responsive while being taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, Pegg said.
Although the nature of his injuries hadn’t exactly been determined, they didn’t appear serious, he said.
Meanwhile, authorities sought the public’s help finding the first car and its occupants, as well as the one that took off following the crash.
Pegg asked that anyone with information about either call Maywood PD: 201-845-8800 .
The Bergen County Police Department was assisting with the investigation of the crash, following standard procedure.
