Lt. Mark Gillies and Officer Greg Mulawka found 46-year-old Shawn Todd just before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Police Chief David Pegg told Daily Voice.

They released him but held onto the evidence – which, it turned out, was stolen from the basement of a Cole Street home being built, he said.

Todd – whose criminal history stretches back more than 20 years -- responded to headquarters, where he was charged with burglary and theft.

He was brought to the Bergen County Jail, where a judge following a detention hearing Thursday ordered that he remain pending the outcome of the case.
