Roland F. Weigel took off after his Ford Expedition struck the 43-year-old Hackensack bicyclist at the intersection of East Passaic Street and Golf Avenue just before 1:30 p.m., Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.

Witnesses said Weigel bailed out and left the car.

The seriously-injured bicyclist was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's Fatal Accident Investigations Unit, which responds to both fatal and serious crashes, responded, along with borough police and the county sheriff's Bureau of Criminal Identification, which collected evidence.

The bicyclist, who sustained leg injuries, was responsive and communicating with police when the ambulance arrived, witnesses said.

Weigel, a retired widower originally from Nebraska, was released pending a Dec. 8 hearing in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
