Former Englewood cop indicted for having loaded gun in Fair Lawn

EXCLUSIVE: A 66-year-old retired Englewood police officer was indicted on weapons charges out of Fair Lawn after a loaded handgun that once belonged to his father was found in a desk at his former security job.

Timothy M. Toine, of Bergenfield, was fired from his position at the Mondelez Global snack food company on Route 208 earlier this year, Sgt. Brian Metzler told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.

While cleaning out Toine’s desk in April, a company employee found a loaded .38 Special with a trigger lock inside a red handgun bag in a drawer, Metzler said.

The weapon was turned over to Fair Lawn police, he said.

Following an investigation, they determined that the gun — originally owned by Toine’s deceased father — wasn’t properly registered.

They arrested Toine on Aug. 2 and released him without bail pending grand jury action, records show.

The indictment returned by the grand jury in Hackensack last week charges him with possession of a handgun without a permit.

Toine, a retired U.S. Marine, served in Viet Nam.
