Detectives had been looking for 20-year-old Luis Paulino of New York City in connection with the Dec. 30 break-in. A resident there dialed 911 at 2:11 a.m. that morning after noticing an intruder in her home.
Officers found a first-floor window open on the side of the house. They searched the area with no luck, but inside the home found Paulino’s phone, Detective Sgt. Mark Gillies said.
It turned out Paulino had been visiting a friend — and one of the victim’s neighbors — Damian Madrid, 18, who already was wanted for failing to report an accident, public records show.
Maywood police arrested Madrid on Monday and charged him with burglary conspiracy. Paulino was taken into custody earlier today on burglary charges. Both are being held on $10,000 each at the Bergen County Jail.
