Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco ordered a trio of county cooling centers opened on Friday.

One of them -- at the county administration building in Hackensack – will remain open through the weekend, Tedesco said ( CALL: 201-336-7300 ).

Hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. there and at:
  • The Northwest Bergen Senior Activity Center at 46-50 Center St., Midland Park (201-445-5690)
  • The Southwest Bergen Senior Activity Center at 147 Hackensack St., East Rutherford (201-935-8920).

Temperatures were expected to climb over 90 degrees, with accompanying humidity that will make it feel closer to 100.

"It is recommended that residents stay indoors if possible from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest and burns and heat strokes are more likely to occur," Tedesco said.

"All age groups are at risk for heat stroke, so please take necessary precautions if you have to be outdoors, including wearing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and staying properly hydrated," he said.

"It is NOT okay to leave a child or pet in a locked vehicle even for a moment as temperatures can rise quite quickly," the county executive added. "It is also imperative to lock all parked vehicles so children cannot accidentally lock themselves inside while playing games like hide and seek."

Besides the cooling centers, Tedesco said public libraries and shopping, recreation and senior centers can also provide relief.
