Cliffside Park Mom: Uniform Policy Would Make Kids Less Materialistic

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. — Muska Hasandjekic of Cliffside Park is sick and tired of seeing her kids try to keep up with the latest and most expensive fashion trends.

These are the new Yeezy's by Adidas, one of the latest trends in shoe fashion. They sold out of shoe stores in a matter of hours. If you want a pair, you have to look online. These were $220 from Adidas.com.

For starters, she's got a $200 pair of barely-worn sneakers upstairs that she can't throw away because her kids say they're outdated.

Hasandjekic is hoping that a new uniform policy recently posted on Cliffside Park Schools website will make her two kids and their peers more appreciative.

"A lot of these kids are so materialistic and they don't realize how expensive it is to keep up with the trends," she said.

"By everyone looking equal, we'd focus on the more important stuff."

The uniform policy would provide additional opportunities for increased safety, a greater sense of school identity and reduce clothing costs.

Daily Voice received an anonymous email from someone saying that school officials are pushing the policy for September without a formal vote regardless of negative feedback from "enraged" parents.

Daily Voice placed unanswered calls and emails to Cliffside Park superintendent Michael Romagnino Wednesday evening and Thursday morning.

What most concerns Hasandjekic is that her son is putting his worth on his clothing, which is why she's putting her son in Catholic school where uniforms are mandated in September.

"He told me a kid in school has so much money and never repeats his clothes. It's not about how much you have," she said.

"How can these kids appreciate anything if they're trying to keep up with the kid who has ten pairs of Jordans?"
