Charles Edmond Denmon had more than a dozen outstanding warrants in more than 13 separate jurisdictions -- along with 30 felony convictions out of nearly 100 previous arrests -- when Officer David Norris tracked him down following the attempted theft this past weekend at the Paterson Avenue Shop Rite.

The shopper "noticed her purse opened and her wallet removed as she turned her back from her cart" to grab an item off a shelf, Lt. Shawn Kudlacik said.

Denmon was trying to stuff the wallet into his pocket when the woman turned, saw what he was doing and snatched it back, he said.

She later gave a description to Norris, who reviewed store surveillance video, canvassed several area businesses and found Denmon at the Stop & Shop in Carlstadt, the lieutenant said.

Denmon tried to flee, but the officer caught up and arrested him, Kudlacik said.

A judge ordered Denmon held on $2,500 bail in the Bergen County Jail.
