BEYOND BERGEN: Charges were pending against a Massachusetts man who shot himself in the calf in the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan tonight when a loaded sawed-off shotgun he was carrying in a gym bag went off, authorities said.
Joseph Riddick, 35, Worcester, MA was at the gate waiting to board a bus on the north wing lower level around 6 p.m. when the bag hit his foot and the 12-gauge gun discharged, the authority’s Joseph Pentangelo told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
Officers immediately rendered first aid, including applying a tourniquet to stem the bleeding.
“The projectile struck him in the left calf and he fell to the floor,” Pentangelo said.
He was taken by ambulance to Bellevue Hospital.
Meanwhile, the terminal area where the shooting occurred remained closed for about 40 minutes.
