SOUTH HACKENSACK, N.J. – A South Hackensack used-car dealer from Edgewater and his wife illegally pocketed $1.2 million in sales tax, authorities charged.

Samyon Gilstein, 33, who owned Sunrise Motors and his wife, Alexandra, 30, the dealership’s manager, collected more than $1.6 million in sales tax – but reported that they’d received only $360,000 – over four years, Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said Thursday.

Detectives from the prosecutor’s office arrested Samyon Gilstein on Tuesday and his wife on Wednesday.

Both were charged with misapplication of entrusted funds and filing a false tax return.

Samyon Gilstein also was charged with corporate misconduct and failing to turn over collected withheld tax.

Both were released on summonses pending first appearances Sept. 6 in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
