The cancer-fighting "No Shave November" campaign is personal for Dumont Police Sgt. Michael Foti, as it is for many law enforcement officers throughout Bergen and Passaic counties.
Foti, whose father died of cancer in January 2014, stirred his colleagues in PBA Local 377 to meet their $7,000 goal with nearly three weeks still left in the month.
Each whisker he grows -- an ability cancer patients lose -- is "in memory of my father...as well as others who have lost their battle and those who continue to battle this horrific disease," Foti said.
Police officers who protect and serve the public in several area towns have similar stories. They are participating either in the "No Shave" campaign or "Movember."
Park Ridge police even added a twist ( see below ).
No-Shave November's worldwide mission the past six years is to not only raise funds for cancer research and treatment -- more than $3.5 million so far -- but to emphasize preventative measures.
Movember's strategy is to promote awareness in three areas of men’s health: prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health, including suicide awareness.
Here are some of the participating agencies:
ALLENDALE/WALDWICK: Allendale-Waldwick PBA Local 217 quickly raised 60% of its $2,500 goal right out of the gate.
