PREVIOUS STORY: WOODCLIFF LAKE, N.J. -- Members of the Pascack Valley Regional High School crisis response team met with students throughout the day Monday as the community tried to cope with the news that a 17-year-old classmate shot himself Sunday morning in a park in Woodcliff Lake.

The boy remained in critical condition on Monday, District Supt. P. Erik Gundersen told parents in an email.

"As per recommendations from experienced therapists, the district is not organizing or hosting a vigil or other formal gathering," Gundersen wrote. "Instead, we encourage students to speak to our counselors or their parents for support."

The crisis response team will remain available for "individual, small group, and telephone consultation with students and parents who are looking for guidance on how to handle the wide range of emotions that our children are dealing with," the superintendent said.

"This will be a lengthy process for our students and school community to deal with, and we are committed to providing our students with ongoing counseling for as long as necessary,," he added. "If you know your child could benefit from this support, please reach out directly to your school counselor so they can reach out to your child in the morning."

The phone number: (201) 358-7060 x24009.

Someone passing through Wood Dale County Park found the injured teen and notified police around 7:30 a.m. Sunday.

He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the head, said Anthony Cureton of the county sheriff's office.

"They did two surgeries and...then did last rites," a family friend told Daily Voice Sunday night.

Daily Voice was withholding the boy's identity because he's a minor.
