The 2017 First Place Emerald Societies Award recognizes outstanding marching during the March 17 parade along 5th Avenue between 44th and 79th streets -- a 255-year tradition.

The award was presented at the Parade's delegate meeting Monday at Cathedral High School on E. 56th Street.

The New York City St. Patrick’s Parade is the oldest and largest of its kind in the world. The first parade was held on March 17, 1762 — 14 years before the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Roughly 150,000 people marched in this year's parade, which drew nearly 2 million spectators.

Loretta Brennan Glucksman, co-founder of Glucksman Ireland House at New York University and Chair Emeritus of the American Ireland Fund, has been named Grand Marshal of the 2018 NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
