NJ Prosecutor's Challenge: Can You Tell Real Gun From Fake?

The danger of police-involved shootings involving suspects carrying fake guns prompted one New Jersey prosecutor to issue a challenge Friday: Can YOU tell the difference?

Which is the real one? Under most lighting conditions, this is what police see.

UPDATE (Monday, Aug. 8): Half of the people who took a quiz posted by a New Jersey prosecutor couldn't tell the difference between a real gun and a fake one. How did YOU do?

"You’re a police officer on patrol by yourself. It’s just after midnight when you receive a call of a suspicious individual in poorly lit local park," said Al Della Fave, spokesman for Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato said.

"You arrive, approach the individual and he pulls out a handgun looking like one of the eight handguns [above]," Della Fave said. "Only one of the eight is real.

"Seven are pellet guns which present no real danger to you.

"Which one of the eight numbered handguns is the real weapon?" he asked. "Which would move you to resort to deadly force?

"Surely, you should be able to detect a pellet gun from a real functioning handgun. It’s part of the job. This predicament presents itself to officers at least once in their careers.

"Choose wisely," Della Fave said. "You’re life depends on it!"

The correct answer will be revealed Monday -- along with how many people chose each gun.

"A police officer has milliseconds to decide," Della Fave said. "How long did it take you?"
