ROCHELLE PARK, N.J. — A New York driver is facing drug charges after two rocks of methamphetamine, a glass jar of marijuana, a scale, baggies, grinder and a vial of suspected THC were recovered by Rochelle Park police from his trunk early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Thomas Lackner, 32 of Delmar, N.Y., was arrested after Lt. Dean Pinto stopped his 2001 Toyota at 12:22 a.m., the lieutenant said.

An hour prior, a New York couple was arrested in Rochelle Park on heroin related charges, police said.

Lackner, who had three passengers in the car, was traveling in the right lane of Route 17 Northbound, with an unclear rear plate as the paint and reflective laminate had been scraped off, Pinto said.

Upon approaching the vehicle, Pinto could detect a faint odor of both raw and burnt marijuana and an alcoholic beverage emanating from the interior of the vehicle, authorities said.

Lackner also exhibited odd behavior and he appeared very nervous, additionally providing conflicting stories as to where the people in the car were coming from, Pinto said.

Despite all three other passengers stating they had come from a PHISH concert at Madison Square Garden, the driver insisted that he was merely coming from a friends home in midtown and that they were all at the friends house and he was just driving them home, Pinto said.

A search of the interior of the passenger compartment led to the finding of no illegal drugs or contraband, but the smell of raw marijuana seemed strongest near the rear seat, according to the lieutenant.

A Bergen County Sheriff’s Office narcotics K-9 was requested and arrived on the scene and provided a positive indication in the vehicle with an emphasis on the trunk area, Pinto said.

A search was conducted and within the trunk, and Pinto located two rocks of methamphetamine, a glass jar of marijuana, a scale, baggies, grinder and a vial of suspected THC, authorities said.

Lackner, who admitted the items located in the trunk were his, was brought to headquarters for processing and released on a summons pending an appearance at Central Judicial Processing.
