New Jersey: Three elections in one season

Three elections within a few months can confuse the electorate, so the League of Women Voters of Northern Valley is reminding people of the dates, beginning with a special primary election on Aug. 13 to choose the two candidates to run for the late Frank Lautenberg’s U.S. Senate seat.

“In addition to the general election on Nov. 5, we also have the Special Election on Oct. 16 to fill the seat,” said Chris Sagona, the league president.

However, she said, it’s “easy to forget” about the Aug. 13 primary.

What’s more, Sagona said, the deadline for voting by mail is this Tuesday through the mail and 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12 to do so in person.

New Jersey holds closed primaries and only the Democratic and Republican parties will be on the ballot.

The deadline to file a change of party affiliation for the special primary has already passed.  However, registered unaffiliated voters (those who have not declared a party affiliation on either their registration form or during a previous primary) may declare at any time up to and including primary election day at the polls and vote in that party’s primary.
