"What happened early Tuesday morning was a true tragedy," Erland Castillo said. "I was one of the first people to call 911, as the victim's lifeless body laid face down on East Clinton [Avenue]."
Robert Hyer Jr. was struck around 5:45 a.m. near the intersection of Woodland Street by a vehicle driven by a 58-year-old Englewood Cliffs woman, Tenafly Police Capt. Michael deMoncada said.
Three motorists immediately pulled over, Castillo told Daily Voice on Wednesday.
"One lady used her car to block the body, which was on the westbound side of E. Clinton," he said. "Another individual approached the body to check if he had a pulse, and I called 911 and gave them our exact location."
Police less than a minute later began administering CPR after finding Hyer “lying in the roadway with substantial injuries and no pulse,” deMoncada said.
The Tenafly Volunteer Ambulance Corps took him to Englewood Hospital and Medical Center, where he died, the captain said.
“Our initial investigation revealed that the pedestrian was likely jogging along the westbound curb of East Clinton Avenue when he was struck by [the] westbound vehicle,” he said.
The driver was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley with minor, non-life threatening injuries and was cooperating with police, who hadn’t filed charges or issued summonses, deMoncada said.
The captain asked that anyone who may have witnessed the crash or been in the area and seen anything before it that could help the investigation call Tenafly Police Traffic Supervisor Sgt. Christopher Bozzo at (201) 568-5100.
