Responding to a 911 call Officer Thomas Mitchell found the boy submerged up to his hip in an area behind Linden and Mark Twain Way.

He grabbed a rope from his police cruiser and, with the help of fellow Officers Liam Kantanas, Keith Iorio and Daniel Stewart, had to boy wrap it beneath his arms.

They then pulled him to safety.

The boy's mother refused any further medical attention for her son after members of the Mahwah Ambulance and Rescue Squad checked him out.

The township Fire Department and Rescue Squad also responded.
