Active duty and retired military dog teams will be honored, as will Customs and Secret Service dogs, search-and-rescue dogs and border patrol dogs, among others. They and their handlers are invited, as are members of the public.

According to the K9 Veterans Organization: “Dogs have bled, suffered, and died while serving in all our wars, to include the war on terror, and they have done so in ways that do us all proud.”
K9 Veterans Day founder Joseph White – a decorated Vietnam veteran and dog trainer – first made it possible for military dogs and their handlers to get the credit due for their bravery and their work both in protecting U.S. borders and rescuing victims in distress.
March 13 was the national date chosen because the U.S. Canine Corp was established on March 13, 1942.
