EXCLUSIVE: A Lyndhurst man was cleaning his legally registered handgun last night when it went off, sending a bullet through both his arm and the couch he was sitting on before smashing a glass display case and lodging in a basement wall.

The 27-year-old man was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, Police Chief James O’Connor told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .

“He’s fortunate it wasn’t worse than it is,” O’Connor said.

The Chase Avenue man apparently had removed the magazine and forgotten that a bullet remained in the chamber as he was cleaning the Glock 23 just before midnight last night, the chief said.

The .40-caliber bullet went through is right biceps, he said.
