UPDATE: Five buildings in Paterson were destroyed by a fast-moving, wind-swept blaze early today that drew firefighters from no fewer than 19 companies in Bergen, Passaic and Essex counties. Power was shut down to the area and roads closed.
“The fire literally jumped from building to building on River Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues,” one firefighter said. “It’s going to be an extensive operation. We’re talking several hours.”
The destroyed structures include a building that housed the Tropicana Go Go Bar, which was closed by a previous fire.
The first building collapsed just before 6:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, separate fires were also reported at 7th and East 18th Street and 122 East 15th Street, according to Beth Antoci of BNN-News .
Firefighters said embers carried by the winds could be responsible.
Among those responding: Paramus, Rochelle Park, Elmwood Park, Saddle Brook, Garfield and Fair Lawn, along with Wayne, Wanaque, Bloomingdale, Clifton, Little Falls, Passaic, Ringwood, Totowa, West Paterson and West Milford, as well as Fairfield, North Caldwell and West Caldwell.
The mobile intensive care unit from St. Joseph’s Medical Center was requested, as well. Residents along a wide stretch of neighborhood were evacuated.
Smoke filled parts of the sky over the Silk City, and PSE&G was responding to a downed power line tonight in the 100 block of East 15th Street .
