Fireman photog follows American bald eagles’ return to Bergen

SHOUT OUT: After following a breeding pair of American bald eagles up and down the Hackensack River since last fall, Willy Thompson recently got a bit of a surprise — a pair of two offspring. He named them Arnett and Kanati, to with the adults, Fred and Ethel.

Thompson, a professional photographer from Maywood, has also spotted four more adults and a few youngsters in the area the last few weeks, while witnessing a heated battle over a dead carp on the ice.

“I feel like I’m in Haines, Alaska sometimes,” he told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

A nesting/breeding pair that found a home on a Superfund site in Ridgefield Park has gotten attention lately. Thompson, however, has been focused on a flock that hasn’t.

A frequent contributor to the PILOT, the Teaneck firefighter, arson investigator and former U.S. Air Force crew chief has assembled photos of his feathered friends — and welcomed the posting of others — on a dazzling Facebook page (CLICK BELOW to access it).

He’s been dazzled himself by the return of the majestic birds to the area.

“I’ve been up and down the river, from Ridgefield Park to the Oradell Reservoir,” said Thompson, a father of three. “The most active area is north of Route 4, behind Riverside Square, up to old New Bridge Landing and the Von Steuben House.”

“They can be seen fishing there.”

Willy Thompson can be seen photographing them.
