YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A Closter crossing guard in his late 70s sustained a broken rib and other injuries when he was struck during a DWI crash outside the Tenakill School while children were arriving this morning.
The driver of one of the two vehicles that collided – identified as 58-year-old Gloria Birulin – was charged with aggravated assault by auto, DWI in a school zone and child endangerment, Closter Police Chief Dennis Kaine said.
A Municipal Court judge ordered her held on $10,000 bail, with arraignment set for Tuesday.
The cars crashed just after 8:30 this morning in front of the Harrington Avenue school, hitting the guard, who was standing in the crosswalk near the curb, Kaine told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
He was taken to HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley in Westwood with back and neck injuries, in addition to the broken rib, the chief said.
Originally from Seattle, the self-employed Birulin recently lost a close friend, Canadian “funny car” drag-racing star Gordie Bonin, 65, who apparently suffered a heart attack in Las Vegas on Nov. 29.
“240 Gordie,” as he was known, is considered among Canada’s greatest race-car drivers ever and was teamed for decades with partners Ron Hodgson and Gordon Jenner. Bonin was indicted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2000.
