The driver of one of the two vehicles that collided – identified as 58-year-old Gloria Birulin – was charged with aggravated assault by auto, DWI in a school zone and child endangerment, Closter Police Chief Dennis Kaine said.

A Municipal Court judge ordered her held on $10,000 bail, with arraignment set for Tuesday.

The cars crashed just after 8:30 this morning in front of the Harrington Avenue school, hitting the guard, who was standing in the crosswalk near the curb, Kaine told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

He was taken to HackensackUMC at Pascack Valley in Westwood with back and neck injuries, in addition to the broken rib, the chief said.

Originally from Seattle, the self-employed Birulin recently lost a close friend, Canadian “funny car” drag-racing star Gordie Bonin, 65, who apparently suffered a heart attack in Las Vegas on Nov. 29.

“240 Gordie,” as he was known, is considered among Canada’s greatest race-car drivers ever and was teamed for decades with partners Ron Hodgson and Gordon Jenner. Bonin was indicted into the Canadian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 2000.
