YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A motorcyclist led police on an overnight 12-mile chase through eight towns after fleeing a stop in Ridgefield before crashing in Wallington.
Ridgefield Police Officer John Scarola tried to stop the Wallington cyclist after he clocked him doing 67 miles an hour on southbound Grand Avenue just after 2 a.m., Sgt. Robert Meurer told CLIFFVIEW PILOT this morning.
The driver kept going, however, leading a pursuit that continued through Fairview into North Bergen on Tonnelle Avenue at upwards of 80 miles an hour, he said.
Given the speed and potential danger, Scarola broke off the chase at 61st Street and North Bergen police picked it up, the sergeant said.
They, in turn, handed off to Secaucus police, who continued the pursuit through Lyndhurst, breaking it off in Rutherford.
Rutherford police followed him through East Rutherford before the crash on Paterson Avenue at Jersey Street in Wallington, East Rutherford Police Chief Larry Minda told CLIFFVIEW PILOT .
The driver, who had no previous record, was unconscious when taken to Hackensack University Medical Center, responders said. His condition couldn’t be determined this afternoon.
He was expected to face a host of charges from various agencies, including eluding in Ridgefield, Meurer said.
