The owner, who lives across Fairview Avenue from her friend, came over around 9 a.m. to feed the dog, who was chained in the backyard when the incident occurred, the chief said.

“The two women were talking, and the victim at one point was between the owner and the dog,” Regino said. “He got spooked somehow and attacked the woman.”

Police and paramedics rendered first aid before she was taken to the hospital, he said.

“There are no formal complaints at this time,” Regino said, shortly before 11:30 this morning.

However, he said, Bergen County Animal Control officers were summoned and took the dog to their Teterboro shelter.

It will eventually be up to a Westwood Municipal Court judge to determine the animal’s fate.
