An NJ Transit officer noticed the shoes under a platform bench around 8:45 a.m. and notified superiors, who summoned the Bergen County Sheriff's Bomb Squad.

"The shoes had some type of wire under them," NJT's Lisa Torbic told Daily Voice. "Turned out they were harmless."

Village police closed down area streets during the removal and the Main/ Bergen and Port Jervis lines were temporarily suspended, Torbic said.

Authorities gave the all-clear and resumed service around 10:10 a.m., she said. Half-hour delays were reported.

A little over a half-hour later, the bomb squad headed to Tenafly, where a child’s old plastic toy, “probably left as garbage,” was found in a small cardboard box in a plastic bag left outside the Stop & Shop.
