Three co-owners of Café Daze were among 10 people arrested by borough police in a seven-hour "Operation Smoke" spot check the weekend of April 1, Lt. George Guzman Jr. said Monday.

A heavily intoxicated 22-year-old woman from Hackettstown had to be hospitalized and a 17-year-old boy from Prospect Park was taken into short-term custody before being released to a parent, Guzman said.

Six underage drinkers were served with juvenile complaints, the lieutenant said. One was 20 years old, four were 19 and one was 18, he said. They were from Haldeon, Clifton, Passaic, Prospect Park and Bergenfield.

The co-owners were identified as:

  • Chintan Patel, 29, of Paramus
  • Darshil Patel, 22, of Elmwood Park
  • Mayank Rana, 21, of Passaic

All three were charged with serving alcohol to minors, selling tobacco to underage teens and maintaining a nuisance, Guzman said. They also received summonses for failing to maintain smoke detectors and providing tobacco to patrons under 21, he sad.

Andrew Manley, 25, of Englewood also was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant before being released on bail, Guzman said.

The rest were released on summonses, he said.

"We expect all of our businesses to remain in compliance with state laws and local ordinances," Police Chief Angelo Daniele said. "Our officers did a tremendous job conducting this detail."

"The focus was to work in conjunction with the Haledon Fire Prevention Bureau, Building Department, and Health Department" to address underage drinking and smoking, unnecessary noise and public urination, among other quality-of-life offenses, Guzman explained.

"Café Daze was shut down and is due to reopen [Tuesday] evening [April 11] unless otherwise directed by Fire Prevention or Health," he said.
