Longtime Fair Lawn Teacher, Mary Gruber, 70, Dies

WESTWOOD, N.J. – Mary Barbara Gruber of Westwood, who taught English at Fair Lawn High School for 42 years, died Sunday. She was 70 years old.

At Fair Lawn High School, Gruber was known for balancing her passion for education with her zest for life and laughter. She created “Friday Fun Days,” for her classes, which included candy and prizes. She also supported her students at Cutters Lacrosse games.

During her summers, Gruber, who formerly lived in River Vale, was a waitress at Marcy's in Park Ridge.

Gruber is survived by her siblings Michael Gruber and his wife Kathy and Christine Ciaccio and her husband Matthew, as well as nieces and nephew Gina DeMar and her husband Chance, Stephanie Scott and her husband Ian, Michael Gruber and his wife Vanessa, Sara Kurpick and her husband Michael, Cortnie LaMere and her husband Douglas and Taylor Ciaccio-Morrissey and her husband Scott.

The family will receive guests at Becker Funeral Home, 219 Kinderkamack Rd, Westwood, NJ on Thursday, August 17, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, August 18, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A celebration of Gruber’s life will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, August 19, at 10 a.m.
