Joseph P. Reilly, 89, Former Hackensack Police Captain

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Joseph P. Reilly, of Hackensack, died on Tuesday, Dec. 13. He was 89.

He was a captain for the Hackensack Police Department where he worked for more than 30 years and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police No. 16 and the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association No. 9. He was also a member of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics and the NJ Police Honor Legion.

He was a Past Grand Knight and former Columbian Club President of the Knights of Columbus Trinity Council # 747 of Hackensack, a charter member of Augustus Rampone General Assembly Fourth Degree # 2150 of Great Meadows. He also served as co-chairman for the NJ State Council Knights of Columbus Special Olympics and served on the NJ State Council committee for the Torch Run for Special Olympics.

He was a parishioner of St. Peter and Paul R. C. Church of Great Meadows, and a former parishioner at Holy Trinity R. C. Church of Hackensack, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and Usher's Society.

A Navy Veteran of World War II and the Korean War he was a member of V.F.W. Post # 7408 of Maywood and the American Legion Post # 0131 of Belvedere. He also was a member of Hackensack Elks Lodge # 658. and the North American Hunting Club. 

He is predeceased by his wife, Irene "Liz" (Dempster) and Barbara (Neighmond). He is survived by his children, Karen Statton and the late Linda Kuchar; grandchildren, Peter Joseph, Lauren and Jennifer; great grandchildren, Allison and Ian. 

Visitation is Sunday, Dec. 18 from 2-6 p.m. at G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Service, 397 Union St., Hackensack.

The funeral is at 10:45 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, from the funeral home, followed by a noon mass at Holy Trinity R. C. Church, 34 Maple Ave., Hackensack. Burial will follow at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veteran's Cemetery, Arnytown.
