HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Joseph M. Mellone, of Hackensack, died on Monday, Feb. 27. He was 87.

Mellone was an engineer for Azzolina and Feury in Paramus for many years, before he retired. He was a past director of the Hackensack Housing Authority, and a member of the Hackensack Chapter of Unico National, Maywood Knights of Columbus No. 3426 and Hackensack Troast Athletic Club.

He was also a parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi Church, in Hackensack, past president of the St. Francis Usher's Society, and a member of the St. Francis Holy Name Society and St. Francis Socialites.

Mellone is survived by his children, Roseann Heytink and her husband Gerry of Hillsdale, and Joseph Mellone and his wife Maddie of Hackensack; grandchildren Sarah and Chris Axelrod, Lisa Heytink, and Karen and Jonce Dimoski; and great-granddaughter Maren Axelrod.

He is also survived by his brother Al Mellone and his wife Theresa of Hackensack; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends.

Mellone was preceded by his wife of 64 years, Josephine (Zisa) Mellone.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, at G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Service, 397 Union St., in Hackensack. The funeral will begin on Friday at 8:45 a.m. from the funeral home, with a 10 a.m. mass at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 50 Lodi St., in Hackensack. Entombment will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, in Washington Township.
