At 91 years old, Kearny died last Sunday.

"He loved his job with the City of Hackensack," Deputy Mayor David Sims said in a social media post.

"He saluted passing cars, greeted every citizen with a smile while he made sure they crossed the busy intersections safely."

Condolences came pouring in.

This one was from a fellow crossing guard.

I can't believe the Ulysses is gone. Him and I work together as Hackensack crossing guards. The most nicest and kindest man you could ever know. Ulysses rest in our Lord's loving arms. My heart feels broken. I'm so glad I've had you in my life. My deepest condolences to your beloved family and friends rest in peace my friend.

Some said he was the model crossing guard.

This man was what a crossing guard was suppose to be, he not only crossed the people, he directed the cars, so many morning I would follow his directions to drive through the intersection, that corner will never be the same. RIP condolences to his family

A funeral will be at the New Hope Baptist Church on Sunday, March 17. Viewing will be at 11 a.m. followed by the service at noon.
