Former Bergenfield Mayor James Lodato, 89, Dies

BERGENFIELD, N.J. – Former Bergenfield Mayor James F. Lodato died on June 11. He was 89.

Lodato, who lived in Bergenfield for more than 60 years, was a councilman for 18 years and mayor for four years.

“The only thing Jim loved more than his family was the town of Bergenfield, and he dedicated himself to its service,” his obituary states.

Lodato was also a member of Bergenfield’s library board, planning board and senior citizens advisory board and served as the town’s police commissioner and fire commissioner.

Lodato was predeceased by his wife of more than 48 years, Georgiana, as well two brothers. He is survived by his three sons, August, Thomas and James, as well as his daughters-in-law, grandchildren, brother, sister-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

Lodato was a graduate of Dwight Morrow High School in Englewood, and Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, and served in the U.S. Army, earning the rank of Sgt. in the 82 Airborne Division. He worked for American Home Products as a salesman, and after he retired, worked as a substitute teacher in Bergenfield and Tenafly.
