Prosecutor: Shooter In Hackensack Neighbor Murder-Suicide Had Second Gun

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Arthur Hillman was carrying two guns when police found his body and that of his neighbor, James Bellamy, at the condominium complex where they'd lived and fought, authorities told Daily Voice on Monday.

Hillman, 63, who resided in unit 3C at the Hampton on Linden Avenue, frequently complained about noise coming from Bellamy's apartment above him, Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal said.

It came to a head Sunday morning, the prosecutor said, when Hillman shot Bellamy, 66, of 4J, dead in the building lobby.

Hillman then got into his car in the parking lot behind the building and turned the gun on himself, Grewal said.

He used a .40-caliber semi-automatic in both shootings but was also carrying a loaded .38-caliber revolver when authorities found his body, the prosecutor told Daily Voice.

Where Hillman got the weapons hadn't officially been determined, he said.

Hackensack police got a 911 call at 9:17 a.m. Sunday "reporting gunshots and a man down in the lobby" of the Hampton, Grewal said Monday.

Responding officers found Bellamy's body next to the elevator, the prosecutor said, adding that he'd been shot several times.

"A building resident directed officers to the rear parking lot of the building and the path taken by [Hillman]," whose body was found in his 2011 Honda Civic, Grewal said.

"It's an unfortunate culmination to a long-running dispute between two residents," the prosecutor said, citing seven calls that Hillman had made to city police since January over noise from the unit above.

The Bergen County Medical Examiner will deliver official causes of death later this week, he said.
