Meningitis-Causing Bacteria Shuts 3 NJ Beaches, 31 Issued Advisories

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection closed three Jersey Shore beaches and cited 31 others for high levels of a bacteria called enterococci on Tuesday.

Clinical infections caused by enterococcus include urinary tract infections, bacteremia, bacterial endocarditis, diverticulitis and meningitis.

The closed beaches include Beachwood Beach West in Beachwood Borough, West Beach Avon Road in Pine Beach Borough and Summit in Island Heights Borough, the NJDEP website says.

Here are the numbers in colony-forming units (cfu) per 100 ml of water, according to the NJDEP:

  • Beachwood West: 1300
  • Summit: 1800
  • West Beach: 920
