The first phase of the project would originate in Hawthorne next to the Bergen Main Line Passenger Service station and end in the City of Hackensack with stops in Paterson and Elmwood Park.
The second phase of the project would extend into Hudson County, offering a connection to the Hudson Bergen Light Rail at the Tonnelle Avenue Station, offering a rail connection between Paterson and Jersey City for the first time.
“These resolutions in support of the Passaic-Bergen Rail Project demonstrate a groundswell of grassroots support for this important project,” Congressman Bill Pascrell (NJ-9) said in a statement. “The North Jersey Rail Coalition is going to continue to advocate for restored passenger service on the NYS&W because of the proven positive effect it has on economic development and job creation.”
The Passaic-Bergen portion of the project provides a key connection between two of New Jersey’s largest employers in St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center. Moreover, it provides a natural link to major transit hubs including the Hackensack Bus Terminal and the Bergen County Main Line.
“This broad support on the local level demonstrates that New Jersey Transit needs to step up and restart this important project for the County of Passaic,” Freeholder Director Theodore Best said. “I am going to continue to fight with our neighbors in Passaic, Bergen, and Hudson County’s to get this project funded and completed. The Passaic-Bergen Rail Project will provide a shot in the arm to our local economies to create local jobs and revitalize our downtowns.”
