HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco and the Department of Human Services announced Bergen County’s 10th Annual Project Homeless Connect will be held Wednesday at the Bergen County Housing, Health and Human Services Center in Hackensack.

The one-day event will provide information, direct and referral services, assistance and hospitality in a convenient one-stop location for people experiencing homelessness.

“We are connecting people to needed services in the community while giving homeless service providers an opportunity to come together under one roof to meet the needs of our less fortunate,” Tedesco said.

In conjunction with the project, a one-day point-in-time survey is being administered by various agencies and a team of volunteers combing the streets of Bergen County.

Last year, 340 people who were homeless were counted, 19 percent of whom were children.

Highlights of the event at the center will include one-stop access to information on Medicaid and food stamps (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, SNAP); employment; legal services; HIV counseling; flu shots; dental, blood and glucose screenings.

Parisian Beauty Academy of Hackensack will provide free hair cuts and manicures. Guest bags with donated gift cards, warm clothing, personal hygiene items and socks will be distributed to the participants. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner also will be graciously donated.

“Homelessness is a reality in Bergen County as it is elsewhere,” Tedesco said. “The data collected through the PIT survey will assist us with program planning and development. This annual effort brings us a step closer to the goal of ending homelessness.”

The event is from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Bergen County Housing, Health and Human Services Center is at 120 S River St., Hackensack.
