Stop & Shop Helps Hackensack-Based Bergen Obesity Prevention Program

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Stop & Shop has donated 150 gift cards to help the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative with its new obesity-prevention program, BVMI officials said.

With nearly half of the agency's patients are overweight or obese -- compared to about 70% of U.S. adults -- the initiative hopes its "Paso a Paso" program will encourage their to lose weight through consistent care, healthy eating, and regular exercise.

“Fruits and vegetables can be expensive, but they’re an important part of a healthy diet,” said Dr. Art DeSimone, BVMI’s medical director.”We are very grateful to Stop & Shop for their donation, which will make a real difference to BVMI patients in the program.”

BVMI doesn;t receive payment from patients, reimbursement from insurance companies or government subsidies. It relies solely on contributions from individuals, businesses, community groups and foundations.
