MAYWOOD, N.J. -- The James and Pauline Hackbarth Foundation is offering five $5,000 scholarships to members of the graduating class of 2016.
Applications are now available.
James Hackbarth lived in Maywood for more than 50 years. A retired builder, he'd built homes in Maywood and the surrounding Bergen County communities, primarily in the 1950s and 1960s. He and his wife, Pauline, enjoyed Maywood's small-town atmosphere and enjoyed participating in its expansion and transition during those years.
Through James' will, the couple established the foundation as a way to give back to the community. The foundation was founded in 2006 with a directive of partnering with the Maywood Library by assisting with capital projects, equipment and cultural opportunities. Since 2006, the foundation has given more than $1 million in such assistance.
A complementary mission of the foundation is its commitment to improving educational opportunities for Maywood students. The foundation has funded Maywood school system requests and spent approximately $200,000 in scholarships for Maywood high school graduates.
