Ex-Bergen Addict: 5 Tips To Help Loved Ones Struggling With Addiction

RIDGEWOOD, N.J. — In light of recent statistics indicating 2017 could be the worst year yet in Bergen County for the opioid crisis yet, a recovering Ridgewood heroin addict is sharing tips for people trying to help their loved ones get sober.

Steve Gambutti, who owns the originals on E. Ridgewood Avenue, is in his fifth year of sobriety. Here are his tips:

1. Take care of you own needs first. You can't help anyone if you can't help yourself. Consider locating your local "AlAnon" meeting to be more educated about their disease.

2. Don't try to protect your loved one from the consequences of their addiction. Without consequences there can be no change.

3. Don't give money to loved ones suffering from addiction. If they can afford drugs, they can afford to pay their bills and eat. Back to the suffering consequences.

4. Remember that there is no human power that can relieve a person of their addiction. This includes you.

5. Always remember to let your loved ones know you love them even if you don't condone their action.
