HACKENSACK, N.J. — Two men who dress up as the Statue of Liberty in downtown Hackensack changed shifts at 3 p.m. Thursday on Mercer and Main streets.
Even more motorists than usual honked and waved at the sight of two.
They hold a sign pointing passers-by to Liberty Tax on Main Street.
“People probably honk because they’re thinking about their refunds,” said one Lady Liberty, who preferred to remain anonymous.
The other, Alex Bernard, agreed.
“People work,” he said. “But they need more money coming in.”
Both have been dressing up as the Statue of Liberty for a few years – seasonally.
The job runs from January to April, they said.
How do they get through the coldest days?
By bundling up — long johns are necessary — and listening to music.
