Defining Moments Theatre Co. is bringing the off-Broadway hit to the Hackensack Cultural Arts Center. The production is the company's first full-length musical.

"The Last Five Years" is a contemporary one-act musical written by Jason Robert Brown. It examines the five-year relationship between Jamie Wellerstein (Zachary Mazouat), a rising novelist, and Cathy Hiatt (Brittany Dolinar), a struggling actress. Unlike most musicals, this show uses a unique storytelling approach where Jamie travels chronologically in time, from the beginning of the relationship to the end, while Cathy travels backwards in time, from the end of the relationship to the beginning.

Frank Borrelli, founder and artistic director of Defining Moments, is directing, assisted by musical director Michael Wada. Borrelli said he chose this production because of its unique storytelling style and its in-depth character evolution through the use of music.

"If we are going to do a musical, I want to do one that gets people to feel something," Borrelli siad. "This show is a roller coaster: it makes you laugh, it makes you cry, but that's the fundamentals of theatre, and that's what we make art for."

The performances will be on Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 2 and 8 p.m. Tickets are $15, $12 for students and seniors, and $10 each for groups of 10 or more. Buy advance tickets here, or at the door, payable by cash, check and credit card.

The Hackensack Cultural Arts Center is located at 39 Broadway.

Defining Moments was established in 2015. Although its new, its staff has decades of experience. The theater company focuses on producing original and scripted pieces, while also providing both private and open instructional classes, and a variety of workshops for all ages.
