To kick off this summer's season, the department chose the blockbuster "Independence Day," starring Will Smith, Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum, in anticipation of the summer release of "Independence Day: Resurgence."

In addition, the department chose this film to kick off the summer film series because of its impact and revitalization of the summer blockbuster, with its release in 1996. "The summers leading up to this movie's release in '96 was a rough time for the film industry," said Greg Liosi, superintendent of the Department of Cultural Arts and Clean Communities Coordinator.

"People were not going to movies to see films and the summer blockbuster was dying. This film completely changed that and it's important to remember that 20 years later."

The Movies Under the Stars series is completely free: all you need is a blanket or lawn chair. Concessions will be on sale. There will be six more films in the series, divided into three categories -- blockbusters, classics and family/sing-alongs.

The screening begins at 8:30 p.m., at the new Atlantic Street Park, at the corner of Atlantic and Warren.

The City of Hackensack's summer film series begin in 2015, in conjunction with the opening of the Atlantic Street Park. The series has grown from three films last summer to seven films this summer. Here are the other films:
  • "Mean Girls" -- May 26, 8:30 p.m.
  • "On the Waterfront" -- June 2, 8:30 p.m.
