League Of Women Voters to Present 'Money in Politics: Fix Corruption'

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The League of Women Voters will present "Money in Politics: Fix Corruption" on Monday, Feb. 29.

With the national presidential campaign in full swing, guest speakers Tom Dolcelli and Teresa DeFrabrizio, of Represent.us will discuss their organization's efforts to pass local anti-corruption laws, with the goals of reducing corruption, ending secret money and empowering voters.

The League of Women Voters has been involved in campaign finance reform and advocating for voting rights for many years. The featured speakers will describe the opportunities and challenges of their grassroots campaign.

This event is sponsored by the Northern Valley, Ridgewood and Bergen County Leagues of Women Voters, as well as the Northern New Jersey National Organization for Women.

The League was an outgrowth of the 19th Amendment, passed in 1920, giving women the right to vote. There are more than 800 state and local Leagues in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., the Virgin Islands and Hong Kong.

  • The organization grown in prestige in a variety of ways:
  • by maintaining its nonpartisanship;
  • sponsoring candidates' forums for local, state and national elections;
  • holding registration drives;
  • disseminating nonpartisan information on candidates;
  • and holding public meetings to discuss current issues.

League membership is open to both men and women of voting age who support its mission. The League of Women Voters of Northern Valley draws members from Alpine, Bergenfield, Cliffside Park, Closter, Cresskill, Demarest, Dumont, Edgewater, Emerson, Englewood, Englewood Cliffs, Fort Lee, Hackensack, Harrington Park, Haworth, Hillsdale, Leonia, Montvale, New Milford, Northvale, Norwood, Old Tappan, Park Ridge, River Vale, Tenafly, Washington Township and Woodcliff Lake.

The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. in the multipurpose room on the first floor of the Bergen County Administration Building, located at One Bergen County Plaza, in Hackensack. The parking lot entrance is off Hudson Street, between One Bergen County Plaza and the Justice Center.
