Hackensack Organization To Celebrate 50 Years Of Giving Back

GARFIELD, N.J. – The Bergen Volunteer Center is celebrating 50 years of service by recognizing individuals, organizations and companies that have shown dedication to its mission to turn “caring into meaningful action by engaging volunteers to meet community needs.”

“We are celebrating the power of volunteers. Thanks to them, the Bergen Volunteer Center is 50 years old and going strong,” said Lynne Algrant, the organization’s chief executive officer. “Winston Churchill said, ‘You make a living by what you get, you make a life by what you give.’ We salute all our honorees for lives well lived.”

The organization will be saluting its honorees at it Hearts of Gold Gala Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Venetian in Garfield.

Honorees include Joseph Sherman, of West Orange, a mentor in the Mentoring Youth program; Mocha Moms, a group for mothers of color, advocating a spirit of community support; Amanda Missey of Hackensack, co-founder of Bergen LEADS; and volunteers Dennis Murray of Dumont, Mike Cargill of Paramus and John Tercek of Dumont for service with the Chore Volunteer Handyman Program.

In addition, Stop & Shop of Wyckoff will be recognized for providing refreshments for many of the Volunteer Center events. Rutherford-based BCB Bank, Montvale-based Benjamin Moore, Teterboro-based Quest Diagnostics and East Hanover-based Novartis Pharmaceuticals also will be recognized.
