The West Milford couple’s themed Escape NJ rooms — located inside of the Kids Rule building on Main Street in Hackensack — are locked and loaded with puzzles, Ouija boards and challenges. Each team has one hour to follow and unlock the clues provided by a proctor to get out.
The family-fun escape was something that the Shersers — who became hooked about a year ago — felt North Jersey locals would appreciate.
“They’re just fun,” Jeff Sherfer said. “We really enjoyed them and there was nothing in this area that has the same kind of ability to entertain a family or people of all ages, really.”
Each room has a different theme. In the “Lord of the Rings” room, for example, teams must follow the clues to find each of the rings. Until they do, they won’t be able to get out.
Participants who check in to the Haunted Hotel room become detectives.
“The storyline is that the city’s hotels are getting no business because there is a ‘haunted hotel’ that everyone is going to,” Sherfer said. “The objective is to prove that it’s just smoke and mirrors — that it’s not haunted.”
Sherfer is will be bringing human bumper balls and paintless paint balls to his facility. He hopes that his large rooms — which accommodate between 10 to 16 people — will be the go-to “escape” for families, corporate events and more.
