Upper Saddle River Matchmaker Helps Bergen County Singles Find Love

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, N.J. -- Michelle Frankel of Upper Saddle River likes to joke that she "makes love all day long."

The Chief Love Officer and founder of NYCity Matchmaking, an upscale matchmaking and date coaching service that helps busy, helps commitment-minded singles in the New Jersey/New York City area find “the one.”

Frankel has matched couples in Franklin Lakes, Ramsey, Ridgewood, Allendale, Paramus, Mahwah, Passaic, Wayne — even several in Rockland County.

She said the many calls and emails from clients telling her she helped changed their lives and are forever grateful is her biggest reward -- she is often invited to weddings and given a shout-out in couples' vows as well as at, years later, their baby showers.

But it wasn't always this way. Frankel, a former lawyer who billed 300 hours a month, said it took an epiphany post Sept. 11 to realize life was too short to be unhappy.

"I gave my notice and took two months off to unwind," she said only to find herself back at a law firm doing legal marketing and running firm operations. Not long after, she got engaged and soon had friends of friends asking if she could recommend anyone to fix them up with. That's when she realized she had found her calling.

That was six years ago and she hasn't looked back. Always a "people person," Frankel said she and her team started her business with lots of chutzpah -- and an iPhone full of contacts. She continues to do everything from personalized introductions to coaching including constructive post-date feedback to help her clients improve in the dating world, from online profile makeovers to online account management and strategy.

"It's all about personalized service and helping clients achieve their goals," she said.

While online dating can be an extremely effective tool which she and her staff utilize for clients with much success, she said it can also be overwhelming with the paradox of choice swiping left and right when not used effectively -- another reason why her personalized matchmaking service is so popular today.

As for what most folks are looking for? It's simple: To be loved, accepted and appreciated.

"Men tend to focus more on physical attributes whereas women on financial stability,' she said.

Her biggest frustration? "Watching singles do the same thing over and over again -- and expecting a different result." She said folks need to give someone "a real chance."

"First dates are tough; don’t judge so quickly," she said. "Perfection does not exist."
